Switchboard Upgrade Services in Punchbowl
Most of the switchboards we replace around Bankstown, Revesby and Padstow are the same story: an original ceramic-fuse board in a 1950s–1970s brick veneer that has had a couple of extra circuits bolted on over the decades, no RCDs on the power or lighting circuits, and a main switch that trips whenever the oven and the reverse-cycle both run at once. That is the job we do most, and we do it in a single day on almost every home in this area.
What switchboard upgrade usually looks like around Punchbowl
Punchbowl has one of the oldest housing stocks in the home-base area, and full board replacements are our most common job here. We swap the Federation-era ceramic-fuse board for individual RCBOs on every final subcircuit, replace any rubber-insulated tails still visible at the meter panel, and hand back AS/NZS 3000 paperwork.
Response target: on-site within 90 minutes for emergencies across Punchbowl and surrounds, day or night.
Key Features of Our Switchboard Upgrade in Punchbowl
- Full DIN-rail board replacement — individual RCBOs on every final subcircuit
- Level 2 (consumer mains, meter relocation) portions coordinated with a licensed Level 2 ASP
- Clear circuit labelling so the next sparky can actually read the board
- Insulation, earth continuity and RCD trip-time testing on every job
- Work certified to AS/NZS 3000; compliance paperwork provided
- Straight advice: we will tell you if the real problem is one bad RCD, not the whole board
A typical upgrade replaces the whole enclosure with a modern DIN-rail board, puts an individual RCBO on every final subcircuit (so a single tripped circuit does not take out the whole house), fits a properly rated main switch, tidies the neutral and earth bars, and re-labels every circuit so the next electrician after us can actually read the board. Where the consumer mains from the meter box are undersized or the meter position needs to move, that portion is Level 2 (network-side) work — we coordinate a Level 2 ASP to do it so you still get one point of contact and one project managed through to sign-off.
Every upgrade is tested end-to-end (insulation resistance, earth continuity, RCD trip times) and left compliant with AS/NZS 3000, with the compliance paperwork provided as required by NSW regulations. If your home is only tripping intermittently and does not actually need a full board, we will tell you that up front — a lot of the time the real fix is one bad RCD, a burnt neutral or a failed appliance, not a whole new switchboard.

Frequently Asked Questions About Switchboard Upgrade in Punchbowl
How do I know if my Bankstown-area home actually needs a switchboard upgrade?
The clearest signs are ceramic (rewireable) fuses instead of circuit breakers, no RCD safety switches on the power and lighting circuits, a main switch that trips when two big appliances run together, a board that visibly runs hot or smells warm, or asbestos-backed panels on very old boards. If your home was built before about 1980 and the board has never been touched, it is very likely due. On the other hand, a board that trips one specific circuit is usually a fault on that circuit, not a full-board problem.
How long does a full switchboard upgrade take in a Bankstown-area home?
On a standard single-storey home in Bankstown, Revesby, Padstow, Panania or Greenacre, a full upgrade is typically a single-day job — power off around 8:30am, board back on and everything tested by mid-to-late afternoon. Homes with a separate granny flat, three-phase supply, or a consumer mains upgrade at the same time run into a second day. We give you a firm timeframe as part of the written quote before any work starts.
Do you handle the meter and consumer mains work as well?
The switchboard itself and everything downstream is our work. If your job also needs consumer mains upgraded, the meter panel relocated or the service line to the pole altered, that portion is Level 2 (network-side) work — we are not a Level 2 ASP, so we coordinate one to do that part. You still get one point of contact and one project managed through to sign-off; you just have a licensed Level 2 sparky doing the network-side work rather than us pretending we can.
Will you install individual RCBOs on every circuit or just one or two RCDs?
Individual RCBOs on every final subcircuit is our standard. It is a small amount extra on parts compared to sharing two RCDs across the whole board, and it means a tripped RCD from a wet outdoor GPO does not take out your fridge, your oven and half the lights at the same time. We only recommend the shared-RCD approach if the budget genuinely will not stretch — and we will tell you what you are giving up.
Do I need council approval for a switchboard upgrade?
No — a switchboard upgrade inside your existing meter box does not need council approval. It does need to be done by a licensed electrician (and if consumer mains are being replaced, a licensed Level 2 ASP for that portion), it must comply with AS/NZS 3000, and compliance paperwork must be provided on completion. We handle all of that as part of the quote.
The board is asbestos-backed — can you still upgrade it?
Yes. A lot of older Bankstown-area boards are mounted on asbestos-cement backing panels. We are trained to handle small quantities of ACM safely, will bag and dispose of it correctly, and replace it with a new modern back panel. If the whole meter box enclosure is asbestos and needs to come out (rather than just the internal panel), we will scope that in writing before starting.
